Boeing Engineers Paper Airplane Record
No, an electromagnetic rail launcher was not used to set this new Guinness World Record, just a small hand-folded paper airplane by Boeing engineers Dillon Ruble and Garrett Jensen. The two have always been fascinated by paper airplanes, so what better record to break than farther flight by paper aircraft? They did just that on December 2, 2022 in Crown Point, Indiana.

The small paper airplane managed to fly for 289.9-feet, which smashed the previous record of 252.7-feet. No information was provided on the paper airplane’s design, but the engineers did say that they tried to mimic the design of various hypersonic vehicles. This project was more than trial and error, as the duo spent between 400-500 hours studying origami as well as aerodynamics before coming up with the record-breaking design. Once the design was finalized, it took 20-minutes to accurately fold the paper airplane.

We would fold paper airplanes back then as a fun childhood activity. Origami, or the art of folding paper, became a long-term passion. It was hard to believe,” Ruble said. “It was one of those moments: Is this real?,” said Dillon Ruble, Boeing engineer.
