The China National Space Administration (CNSA) revealed plans for a future Moon base and city last week. This lunar outpost would be built in phases, starting with the Chang’e-6 mission that is set for launch next month.
Called the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) project, it will begin as a scientific experimental base for multi-objective research activities that focus on lunar exploration and utilization. It will be designed to accommodate either long-term independent operation on the lunar surface or orbit.

The moon serves as a starting point, and an international lunar research station will provide a platform for long-term scientific research, work and habitation, paving the way for future human exploration into deeper space. It will serve as a technological, material, and intellectual reservoir, preparing us for future missions to Mars and other distant destinations in space,” said Wu Weiren, chief designer of China’s lunar exploration program.
