Skiing competitions are a big part of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, but it’s not just for talented athletes. Researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University have developed a six-legged robot capable of skiing 10 meters per second over 400 meters on an 18-degree snow track. That’s right, it’s capable of accelerating, turning, planning routes, avoiding obstacles, and all without human-robot interaction.
The researchers fine tuned the robot’s key algorithm, which allowed it to analyze human skiers’ behaviors and mimic their skiing movements. What’s next for this six-legged robot? Researchers hope that with the assistance of advanced technologies likes 5G and other wireless networks, the robot can race side-by-side with human competitors in the same field.
