Chipotle Mexican Grill recently unveiled their latest digital innovation, Chippy, an autonomous kitchen assistant that harnesses the power of artificial intelligence to make fresh tortilla chips. This robot was developed by Miso Robotics and specially trained to follow Chipotle’s exact recipe to create their famous tortilla chips by using corn masa flour, water and sunflower oil with a dusting of salt before fresh lime juice is splashed on them.
Before they hit actual Chipotle restaurants around the world, its being tested at the company’s Cultivate Center in Irvine, California. The team is leveraging its stage-gate process to listen, test and learn from crew and guest feedback before deciding on how to best implement them across the nation. Chippy joins Pepper in Chipotle’s artificial intelligence suite in a bid to help improve the company’s overall guest and employee experience.

Everyone loves finding a chip with a little more salt or an extra hint of lime. To ensure we didn’t lose the humanity behind our culinary experience, we trained Chippy extensively to ensure the output mirrored our current product, delivering some subtle variations in flavor that our guests expect,” said Nevielle Panthaky, Vice President of Culinary, Chipotle.
