Hurricane Helene touched down about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida, at 11:10 p.m. ET Thursday, with wind gusts clocked as high as 140 mph. Its impact has been felt across the Southeast and into sections of the mid-Atlantic as the gargantuan storm pushes farther inland.
The destruction extended hundreds of miles northward to northeast Tennessee, where a dangerous rescue situation by helicopter involved moving 54 people to the roof of the Unicoi County Hospital in Tennessee as water rapidly flooded the facility. Fortunately, everyone was safely rescued and nobody was left at the hospital as of late Friday afternoon. Tornadoes even hit some areas, including a region in Nash County, North Carolina, that critically injured four people.
