Elon Musk Nuke Mars

There could be two reasons why SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted, “Nuke Mars!” earlier today, and one could be a t-shirt idea, and the other, terraforming the Red Planet. If it’s the latter, Musk believes hitting Mars with nuclear weapons will melt the planet’s polar ice caps and release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, thus creating a greenhouse effect that raises the temperature and air pressure of the planet. Musk said that he would then create two miniature ‘suns’ over the poles using nukes, which would then warm up the planet and turn any frozen carbon dioxide into gas. Since CO2 is a potent greenhouse gas, as in it absorbs and traps heat, the more of it that’s in the atmosphere, the warmer the surface of Mars becomes.
