Elon Musk revealed SpaceX’s new autonomous spaceport drone ship, and it’s called A Shortfall of Gravitas (ASOG), named after the science fiction series Culture by Scottish writer Iain Banks. This new vessel joins Just Read The Instructions (JRTI) and Of Course I Still Love You (OCISLY) in recovering rockets at sea, as it just began its first sea trial just outside of Port Fourchon.
Currently, Of Course I Still Love You (OCISLY) handles West Coast missions, while A Shortfall of Gravitas (ASOG) is expected to join Just Read The Instructions (JMRTI) to support the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy missions launching from the John F. Kennedy Space Center as well as Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, in Florida. These unmanned drone ships do not require a tugboat, thus enable the company to save on fuel and increase the amount of payload being carries into orbit.
