Around 15-years ago, a Florida man stumbled upon a plaque at a garage sale, but little did he know that it contained a piece of actual moon rock from the Apollo 17 mission. Most of these samples are safely locked away in NASA vaults, although Richard Nixon did gift nearly 200 samples to the 50 US states, the country’s territories, and foreign governments, which have gone missing. There is a small number that have been reported stolen, including this one taken from the Louisiana State Museum years ago.
Once realizing what was in his possession, the man promptly reached out to the Louisiana governor’s office and directed to the state museum to return it. Initially, they wanted him to mail the plaque back to them, but considering its weight and value, he hand-delivered this priceless 1972 piece of lunar history back to them.

I can’t even tell you how long I owned it for. I’m not even sure how much I paid for it. I buy plaques because I take the wood from the plaques and I send it over to my gunstock guy and he makes grips for my Colts and so forth,” said the man to collectSPACE.
