Google Imagen is a powerful AI text-to-image generator, and Matt Walsh wanted to see just what it was capable of when used on Zork, a text-based adventure game from 1977. Put simply, players type text commands to explore the Great Underground Empire. This entails traversing locations, solving puzzles, and collecting treasure.

Imagen basically generated seven diffusion models to create a low-resolution draft before upgrading the resolution of the visuals repeatedly. Google’s LAMDA AI was then used to compress the information so Imagen could process the data and remember its location in-game for continuity when a player would return to the same place. On a related note, Zork was officially included in the game canon by the Library of Congress as one of the ten most important video games of all time.

Google Pixel Buds A-Series - Wireless Earbuds - Headphones with Bluetooth - Compatible with Android -...
  • Pixel Buds A-Series wireless earbuds deliver rich, high-quality audio, no matter what you’re listening to.
  • With a flush-to-ear design, three eartip sizes, and a stabilizer arc, the wireless earbuds stay in place and create a gentle seal for amazing sound.
  • Get up to 5 hours of listening time or 2.5 hours of talk time with a single charge, or listen for up to 24 hours with the charging case[1].

This is an example of the potential of these types of generative AI integrations, but also the limitations. It is also not clear that any game maker would allow this much randomness into their game, but it certainly could be used in the creative process,” said Bret Kinsella, Voicebot and Synthedia founder.
