Remember Grim Fandango? If your memory is fuzzy, it is a 1998 adventure game by LucasArts for the Windows platform, and the first one by the developer to use 3D computer graphics overlaid on pre-rendered static backgrounds.
It combines elements of the Aztec afterlife with a film noir style, influenced by The Maltese Falcon, On the Waterfront and Casablanca. Despite its art design and direction, it was a commercial failure mainly due to LucasArts’ decision to end adventure game development as well as the decline of the adventure game genre. This Unreal Engine 5 remake of the intro shows what the game could look like on next-generation consoles.
