Huawei’s latest leap into the future of smartphones has landed with the Mate XTs, a device that refines the trifold concept with practicality and flair. Announced in China today and available to order now, this second-generation trifold phone builds on the bold design of the original while introducing subtle, yet significant updates.
Stylus support turns the Mate XTs into more than just a phone. The 10.2-inch folding display, which can collapse into 7.9-inch or 6.4-inch configurations, now responds to a stylus, opening up new possibilities for note-taking, sketching or precise navigation. This feels like a natural fit for a device with such a large canvas, offering creatives and professionals a pocketable tablet that’s also a phone.

The Mate XTs trifold mechanism is a marvel of engineering. Unlike foldables which have one hinge, this has two hinges that fold the flexible screen into three parts like a brochure. When fully extended it’s a 10.2 inch tablet, folded once it’s a 7.9 inch screen for one handed use, and folded twice it’s a 6.4 inch smartphone. The hinges are smooth but durable, the screen lays flat when open and snaps shut with minimal creasing thanks to Huawei’s advanced display technology.
Underneath the Mate XTs is the new Kirin 9020 chipset, an upgrade from its predecessor. This processor is fast, easily handling multitasking across the expanded screen and demanding apps. Paired with this is a new 40-megapixel ultrawide camera, which promises more detail and better low-light performance than the original. The camera system isn’t a complete overhaul, but refines Huawei’s already good photography credentials so you can capture wide landscapes or group shots with clarity.
Color options add some personality to the Mate XTs. Alongside the returning red and black, Huawei introduces white and purple models, all in imitation leather for a premium feel. The purple is particularly nice – a bold choice that gives the device a unique edge without being too loud. The focus on design extends to the build, which feels sturdy and luxurious despite the complex folding mechanism.

Price is still important, since the 17,999 yuan ($2,520) is significantly less than the original Mate XT’s 19,999 yuan ($2,800), which helps to mitigate the impact of the premium pricing. For comparison, the Mate XT was priced at €3,499 (about $4,070) in international markets, so the XT’s lower starting price may make it more affordable in China. However, this device is still intended for early adopters and tech enthusiasts prepared to invest in cutting-edge design.
