Back in the mid-1980s, things like an IBM 7532 Industrial Computer cost more than a brand new car, or $6,149 USD ($17,582 in 2023). Why? Well, first off, the personal computer was quite new technology at the time, thus the cost of building a computer was very high.
More specifically, the IBM 7532 was designed for information-handling applications in industrial plant floor environments, where a system more resistant to harsh physical conditions is required. If you’re wondering why it looks different from other PCs at the time, it’s because the system was designed for floor-standing operation, with the base model powered by an Intel 80286 microprocessor, complete with a high-capacity (1.2Mb) diskette drive, 512Kb of standard memory, as well as the ROM-based BASIC language. Want more features? The cost can easily balloon up to more than $10,000 ($28,593 in 2023).
