Cross-platform instant messaging platform ICQ was released to the public on November 15, 1996, and now, after nearly 28-years, it has officially shut its doors. ICQ’s fully centralized service and one-on-one conversations set the blueprint for later instant messaging services like AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and Yahoo Pager.
Speaking of AIM, it was America Online who acquired ICQ in 1998 and grew that platform into one of the largest real-time instant messaging platforms at the time, with the US firm claiming more than 100 million accounts in the early 2000s. VK eventually took over ICQ in 2010 and at one time, they were developing apps for both Android as well as iOS. The service was officially shut down as of June 26, 2024. with its current owner asking users to move over to VK Messenger and VK WorkSpace.
