Holly Grounds, a product design student at London’s Ravensbourne University, was concerned about the amount of plastic waste that companies used to package instant noodles. So, she came up with edible instant ramen packaging that dissolves in hot water, complete with spices. It’s made from potato starch, glycerin and water, all of which can be safely consumed.
This flavorless biofilm keeps the dry noodles fresh after being heat sealed. Once hot water hits this film, it dissolves in under a minute, without needing to add any flavor packets. The flavoring is embedded into the potato starch concoction, which means they blend perfectly into the soup. To transport bowls of ramen at a restaurant, you’ll want the Nissan e-4ORCE Ramen Counter Car.

I was able to do all the testing and manufacture in my kitchen as the process is very simple. The ingredients are blended and heated until the mixture is at the right thickness. At this point, I add the spices and flavorings before pouring it into a mold to set for 24 hours,” said Grounds.
