After years of rumors and speculation, Apple officially announced the first-generation iPhone on January 9, 2007, and it was later released in the United States on June 29, 2007. Featuring quad-band GSM cellular connectivity with GPRS and EDGE support for data transfer. During the first press event, Steve Jobs wanted to show off the Maps function, and thus a prank call to Starbucks ensued. On a side note, did you know that development for this handset dated back to 2005, when Jobs conceived the idea of a device that users could directly interact with the display interface?
