Italy Mount Etna Volcano Vortex Rings
Italy’s Mount Etna volcano was captured billowing rare vortex rings into the sky earlier this month. These near-perfect circles of gas are emitted from a volcano when gas, mainly water vapor, is discharged through a vent in its crater.

These volcanic vortex rings (VVRs) started appearing in April after a new vent opened over Mount Etna’s southeast crater. Each ring stays up in the sky for around 10 minutes before dissipating, providing photographers on the ground with plenty of time to capture the perfect shot. Speaking of craters, did you know that Etna erupted so much volcanic material over a six-month period in 2021 that its height increased by approximately 100-feet?
