Joby Aviation’s electric air taxi successfully performed an exhibition flight around New York City yesterday, marking the first time ever that it has flown in an urban setting. This eVTOL was engineered to have a dramatically lower acoustic footprint than today’s helicopters, allowing it to operate in densely populated areas.
This 4,000 pound aircraft has a top speed of over 200-mph (322-km/h) and around a 150-mile (241-km) range when fully charged. So far, Joby has flown more than 30,000 miles with its full-scale prototype eVTOL aircraft, starting in 2017. Its first eVTOL aircraft rolled off its Pilot Production Plant in Marina, California earlier this year and commercial passenger service is expected to begin in 2025.

By electrifying one of the most famous heliports in the world, New York is demonstrating global leadership in the adoption of electric air travel. We’re grateful for the support of the city, and we’re honored to be working with visionary partners like Delta Air Lines to bring our air taxi service to this market. We plan to make quiet, emissions-free flight an affordable, everyday reality for New Yorkers, while significantly reducing the impact of helicopter noise,” said JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation.
