If you’ve been following the protests going on around the world and heard the term LRAD, it stands for Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD). This acoustic technology, developed by LRAD Corporation, transmits warning tones over longer distances or at higher volume compared to normal loudspeakers. They can be used as a means of non-lethal, non-kinetic crowd control.

These systems can weigh anywhere from 15 lb to 320 lb and emit sound in a 30°–60° beam at 2.5 kHz. They are typically used by law enforcement, government and defense agencies, to broadcast audible notifications as well as warnings over a distance. LRAD systems can also be used to deter wildlife from airport runways, wind / solar farms, nuclear power plants, gas / oil platforms, and mining operations.
