City of the Monkey God

Legendary lost cities are things you normally see in movies and storybooks, but one of them has been discovered in the Honduran rainforest. It’s known as the “City of the Monkey God,” and archaeologists have spent years tracking down the abandoned city’s resting place. The most surprising thing is that the remains have been left seemingly untouched since it was last inhabited roughly a thousand years ago. A cache of stone sculptures was found at the base of a pyramid, suggesting that they may have been left as an offering. Continue reading for a video and more information.

“Although the lost city doesn’t appear to have experienced much looting, researchers are concerned that the publicity related to the city’s discovery might encourage some vandals to interfere with the site. A larger threat, perhaps, is deforestation in the area. Rainforest lands are being cleared in large swaths in Honduras to make way for cattle-farming,” reports Inhabitat.
