Luggable Sharp PC-7000 Computer
There’s the Mazda suitcase car, and then the luggable Sharp PC-7000 computer from 1985. Weighing in at a hefty 19-pounds, it features an LCD display with electroluminescent backlighting, an Intel 8086 processor running at a user switchable 7.3 MHz, 320 KB of memory, and near-true IBM PC compatibility.

On the right side, you’ll find two half-height, vertically-mounted 5.25″ floppy disk drives from Canon with shock absorption. An included BIOS setup utility in ROM enabled users to set the time and date of the computer’s internal clock / calendar, invert the display’s colors, as well as witch between clock speeds. The PC-7000’s luggable chassis is similar to that of a portable radio, toaster or lunchbox and a detachable keyboard can be used to protect its 10.5-inch display. When placed in a Sharp carrying case, this hefty computer was compliant with carry-on luggage rules set by the FAA at the time, even with an optional printer attached. How much did one of these cost? Around $1,795 USD, which translates to $5,035 today.
