M1A2 Abrams Tank Crewman Inside
The Chrysler Defense-designed M1 Abrams is essentially a third-generation battle tank designed for modern armored ground warfare. Weighing almost 68 short tons, it’s powered by a multifuel turbine engine and boasts Chobham composite armor, separate ammuniation storage in a blow-out compartment, a computer fire control system, and nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons (NBC) protection for crew members.

As a crewman enters the loader’s hatch, they will be in a spot just high enough to stand, while immediately behind you towards the back of the turret is the “ready rack” where the munitions are kept. Directly in front of you is the radio and other electronics that the loader maintains. Right in the center of the turret is the breech of the main gun and there’s a space behind it for a steel basket to catch spent shells.
