Max Verstappen Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer Beast Miami
Two-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen was lucky enough to get behind the wheel of the Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer, nicknamed ‘The Beast’, ahead of the Miami GP last week. Why is it called ‘The Beast’? It’s powered by an IndyCar twin-turbocharged 2.2L V6 engine generating 800 hp, paired with an XTRAC 6-speed manual gearbox.

Aside from the IndyCar powerplant, it features an Acura NSX GT-3 Evo22-sourced front suspension and Dallara IR-18 Indy car rear suspension. Honda Performance Development (HPD) engineers call this vehicle a ‘rolling laboratory’ because the body consists of a chromoly steel tube chassis and a lightweight carbon composite on the lower half, sitting on a Honda CR-V Hybrid shell. Rounding out the modifications are sleek orange 20×10.5-inch (front) and 20×11-inch (rear) alloy wheels wrapped in Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 Ultra-High Performance summer tires.

The CR-V Hybrid Racer is our ‘rolling electrified laboratory’, to investigate where the talented men and women of HPD and Honda could go with electrification, hybrid technology and 100% renewable fuels. It epitomizes Honda’s fun-to-drive ethos, showcases electrification and it just rocks our car culture roots and racing heritage!,” said David Salters, president and technical director for Honda Performance Development (HPD).
