MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) researchers used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to observe a deep-sea squid mom carrying hundreds of eggs to keep them safe from predators. It was spotted at a depth of 4,560-feet at more than 56-miles offshore from MBARI’s facilities in Moss Landing, California.
This breathtaking ultra high-definition resolution 4K video from the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Doc Ricketts enbables researchers to examine the oceanic parent in amazing detail. Octopuses are well known for protecting their eggs, but just three species of squid are known to stay with their young. They basically reproduce by depositing egg cases on the seafloor or releasing eggs in a gelatinous mass capable of drifting in open water. Believe it or not, this transformable SQUID drone that can be shot out of a cannon also exists.

The deep ocean is challenging to study and we only get brief glimpses into the behaviors of deep-sea animals. MBARI’s archive of thousands of hours of underwater video has helped illuminate life in the largest living space on Earth,” said the researchers.
