MBARI researchers have discovered a never before captured on video swimming sea slug, also known as bathydevius caudactylus. It’s been nicknamed the ‘mystery mollusc’ and can be found in the ocean’s midnight zone, complete with its large gelatinous hood, paddle-like tail, and bioluminescence.
This mystery mollusc live in the waters offshore of the Pacific coast of North America at depths between 1,000 to 4,000 meters (3,300 to 13,100 feet) below the surface, also known as the bathypelagic zone. To capture prey, it uses a cavernous hood to trap crustaceans, similar to a Venus fly trap’s thigmonasty.
