Phantom Jellyfish Antarctica
There have been fewer than 150 sightings of the mysterious phantom jellyfish ever, and this one was captured on camera off the coast of Antarctica’s Ronge Island by a group of travelers on Viking Expeditions. These giant 30-foot intervertebrates can typically be found in the midnight zone of polar oceans and feed on plankton as well as small fish.

One interesting thing that researchers have noticed is that the phantom jellyfish is often seen with a small fish, called pelagic brotula, and not as food. Put simply, the fish receives shelter and protection from the jellyfish for keeping the invertebrate disease-free by feeding on any parasites that attach to it. Its circular stomach is believed to contain canals that travel to the surface of the sub-umbrella, while its lower stomach is thick enough carry their long ribbon-like arms.
