NASA Goddard has just released a video that uses data gathered from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft to recreate the incredible views of the Moon that Apollo 13 astronauts witnessed on their perilous journey around the farside in 1970. These visualizations, in 4K resolution, show many different views of the lunar surface, starting with earthset as well as sunrise and concluding with the time Apollo 13 reestablished radio contact with Mission Control. Read more for the video and additional information.
That’s not all, this video also depicts the path of the free return trajectory around the Moon, and a continuous view of the Moon throughout that path. One thing to note is that all of the views have been sped up for timing purposes, or in other words are not in “real-time.”
