NASA James Webb Space Telescope Sound
If you thought the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) images were breathtaking, just wait until you hear what they sound like. NASA teamed up with musicians and had them assign unique notes to the semi-transparent, gauzy regions and very dense areas of gas and dust in the Carina Nebula, resulting in a buzzing soundscape that sounds other worldly.

The sonification you hear in this video basically scans the Carina Nebula image from left to right. All of the sounds are vibrant and full, representing the detail in this massive, gaseous cavity that looks like a galactic mountain range. Brighter areas in the image are louder, while the vertical position of light also shows the frequency of sound.

JWST also captured two views of the Southern Ring Nebula in both near-infrared light (left) as well as mid-infrared light (right), and each of them have been translated to sound. The colors in these images were mapped to pitches of sound, or in other words, the frequencies of light were converted directly to frequencies of sound. If you just can’t get enough, NASA’s Perseverance rover captured these sounds of Mars.

When I first heard a sonification, it struck me in a visceral, emotional way that I imagine sighted people experience when they look up at the night sky. I want to understand every nuance of sound and every instrument choice, because this is primarily how I’m experiencing the image or data,” said Christine Malec, a member of the blind and low vision community who also supports this project.
