NASA Mars Perseverance Rover String Object Rocks
Another week, another unusual sighting by NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover. This time, it used its Front Right Hazard Avoidance Camera A to capture what appears to be a string-like object that some internet users are calling galactic spaghetti next to rocks. No other explanation was provided, other than it was acquired on July 12, 2022 (Sol 495) at the local mean solar time of 16:56:25.

What are HazCams? Well, Perseverance comes equipped with six Hazard Detection Cameras: four on the front and two on the rear of the rover body. They function exactly as you’d think… detecting hazards to the front and back pathways of the rover. This would include large rocks, trenches, sand dunes, or galactic spaghetti. Researchers also utilize the front HazCams to see where to move the robotic arm to take measurements, photos, as well as collect rock or soil samples. However, it’s only a matter of time until human explorers get an up-close look at this bizarre doorway on Mars.

When driving, the rover stops frequently to take new stereo images of the path ahead to evaluate potential hazards. The 3D views give Mars 2020 the ability to make its own decisions about where to drive without consulting on every move with the rover team on Earth,” said NASA.
