NASA Perseverance Mars Rover Dust Devil Sound
NASA’s Perseverance has record the sound of a giant dust devil hitting the rover on Mars. It was captured using its SuperCam instrument on Sept. 27, 2021, while the NavCam, along with the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA), accurately measured wind speeds based on the intensity of the sound of the gusts.

This wasn’t the first dust devil it detected, as the rover had already observed 90 dust devils passing overhead, but this was the first time the microphone was switched on. This late-morning dust devil resulted in a slight drop in atmospheric pressure and rise in temperature as it swept over the rover. It measured at least 118 meters tall while traveling at approximately 20 kilometers per hour.

With this dust-devil recording, we can actually hear and count particles impacting the rover,” said Naomi Murdoch, a planetary scientist at the Institut Supérieur de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace (ISAE–SUPAERO) to Space.com.
