NASA’s Perseverance rover might have stumbled upon its most important destination yet: ‘The Bacon Strip’ on Mars. Why? At the base of these rock formations, you spot something that looks just like the cured meat that many enjoy. Now that it arrived at the top, ‘Hogwallow Flats’ was the name given to the nearby rocks.
One question you may be asking is how Perseverance manages to avoid collisions in such rock-filled areas, and the answer is quite straightforward. It uses its SuperCam instrument to shoot the LIBS laser at the surface to create a plasma and perform spectroscopy, while its Rover Collision Model flight software autonomously stops any activity before a collision could happen. Now the only thing left to do is wait for NASA to build a special telescope to investigate these areas on Mars, similar to the Lunar Crater Radio Telescope (LCRT).
