Scientists from the Curtin School of Molecular and Life Sciences have discovered a new bee species that has a dog-like snout, called leioproctus zephyr. Author of the research paper, Dr Kit Prendergast, named it after her own dog Zephyr. It’s a part of the genus Leioproctus, which consists of over 300 species of bees located across Australasia and South America.
The Leioproctus zephyr speicies has an extremely limited distribution, only found in seven locations across the southwest WA to date, and have not been collected from their original location. It was collected using a small entomological sweep-net bag during a study of native bee populations in the bushland areas surrounding Western Australia. We have these bees, and then this new giant isopod that looks to be straight from the prehistoric period.

They were entirely absent from residential gardens and only present at five urban bushland remnants that I surveyed, where they foraged on two plant species of Jacksonia. Not only is this species fussy, they also have a clypeus that looks like a snout,” said Dr. Kit Prendergast, Curtin School of Molecular and Life Sciences.
