Nikon announced today that it is set to acquire cinema camera maker RED, and once complete, it will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the former. The latter was first established in 2005 and known for such cameras as the RED ONE 4K as well as V-RAPTOR [X] with its proprietary RAW compression technology inside a body that weighs just 4-pounds.
Both Nikon and RED aim to meet customers’ needs while offering exceptional user experiences that exceed expectations. Merging the strengths of both companies will allow them to do so. Nikon will also gain RED’s knowledge in cinema cameras, including unique image compression technology and color science, to enable the development of distinctive products in the professional digital cinema camera market.
