Nintendo’s Satellaview is a rarely talked about satellite modem for the Super Nintendo / Famicom that was released in 1995. This service was exclusive to Japan and enabled users to download games, magazines, as well as other media through satellite broadcasts provided by St.GIGA.
Satellaview featured 1 megabyte of ROM space as well as an additional 512 kB of RAM and it attaches to the expansion port on the bottom of the Super Famicom. Users had to store game and broadcast information on 8 MB memory packs, which are inserted into the top of a special BSX application cartridge.

There were a total of 114 games released for Satellaview, with some being remakes or updates of older Family Computer and Super Famicom games, while others were created specifically for the service. When not playing games, magazines such as Famitsu and Nintendo Power could be downloaded to the memory packs. Despite peaking at over 100,000 subscribers in 1997, Satellaview was discontinued on June 30, 2000 due to a severe lack of outside support and a shrinking player base.
