Remember the 1991 Super Nintendo (SNES) ad that featured a young Paul Rudd? It showed a 20-something Rudd, rocking a long black duster, indie-style hair, and a beaded necklace, hyping up the SNES with games like F-Zero and The Legend of Zelda? Well, Nintendo brought him back to recreate that iconic energy for the Switch 2, which launches globally on June 5, 2025.
In the 90-second Switch 2 commercial, titled “Now You’re Playing Together,” Rudd, now 56 but looking eerily similar to his ’90s self, struts into a living room wearing the same duster, necklace, and hairstyle. He docks the Switch 2 with that same over-the-top intensity, but this time he’s joined by comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, plus a kid who calls him “Uncle Paul.”

They play Mario Kart World together, showcasing the console’s new GameChat feature, which lets players video chat and share screens in real-time, even across different games. The commercial leans into the cheese, with a fog machine and fan blowing for that intense ’90s ad aesthetic, and the group teases Rudd for his retro getup and hammy attitude.

It wraps with Rudd updating the old slogan to “Now we’re playing together,” emphasizing the Switch 2’s social features. The commercial also highlights some Switch 2 tech: the GameChat feature uses the console’s built-in microphone and supports a USB-C camera for video chats with up to four people.
