CarWow is back at it again, and this time they pit a Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 against a BMW E39 M5 in a classic sports car drag racing showdown. At 3,439-pounds, the R34 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.6L inline-6 cylinder engine making 280 hp and 293 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, enabling it to hit 62 mph in 4.9-seconds, while topping out at 155 mph.
Weighing in at 3,957-pounds, the BMW E39 M5 is powered by a naturally-aspirated 4.9L V8 engine generating 395 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox, which allowed it to hit 62 mph in 5.3-seconds, while topping out at 155 mph. On paper, both vehicles seem fairly matched, and the drag races you’re about to see show exactly why. As for us, we’d gladly take the 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec in Midnight Purple if another one ever comes up for sale.
