It’s official, the 2004 Ford Shelby GR-1 concept car is entering production, thanks to Irvine, California-based classic car replica manufacturer Superformance. The original aluminum-clad supecar is powered by a 6.4-liter V-10 generating 605 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Superformance CEO Lance Stander stated that the first 200 GR-1s built—in conjunction with Shelby American will sport aluminum bodies, either polished or painted, while subsequent cars are going to have carbon fiber bodies. Uber is using CES 2019 to showcase its vision for a future of on-demand air travel, and it plans to roll out air taxis, which appear to be a cross between a helicopter and a giant drone, by 2023. Designed by Textron’s Bell division, the Bell Nexus is powered by a hybrid-electric propulsion system in a bid for more efficient air travel. The Uber Air service will begin in the Dallas-Fort Worth area as well as Los Angeles in about four years, with an international market that has yet to be announced. Citizen scientists have used data from NASA’s Kepler spacecraft to detect a planet roughly twice the size of Earth located within its star’s habitable zone, or the range of orbital distances where liquid water may exist on the planet’s surface. Called “K2-288Bb” and located 226 light-years away, the star could either be a rocky world like Earth or a gas-rich planet like Neptune. “It’s a very exciting discovery due to how it was found [and] its temperate orbit and because planets of this size seem to be relatively uncommon,” said Adina Feinstein, a University of Chicago graduate student and lead author of the study. Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) scientists have officially discovered the second repeating fast radio burst (FRB) – short bursts of radio waves coming from far outside our Milky Way galaxy – ever recorded. “Until now, there was only one known repeating FRB. Knowing that there is another suggests that there could be more out there. And with more repeaters and more sources available for study, we may be able to understand these cosmic puzzles — where they’re from and what causes them,” said Ingrid Stairs, a member of the CHIME team and an astrophysicist at UBC.
Sharp unveiled today at CES 2019 in Las Vegas their first 8K Micro Four Thirds camera, and it’s also the first 8K camera priced under $5,000. There’s no official specifications list, but the prototype camera is using an Olympus lens and can reportedly shoot 8K footage at 30 fps, with the company aiming for 60 fps by the time the production model is released. It will use the H.265 codec and boasts a 5-inch swiveling touchscreen, an SD card slot, HDMI / USB ports, a headphone jack, microphone, and mini XLR ports.
