Pebble Time 2 E-Paper Smartwatch Design
Pebble’s story began as a little startup that won you over with simple timepieces, only to fall and then rise again. Today, the final design of the Pebble Time 2 was revealed, which combines nostalgia with a few new features.

Made from 316 stainless steel, the Pebble Time 2 has a premium feel without being too heavy. At 48g with the strap, 32.5g for the case alone, it sits comfortably on the wrist – solid but unobtrusive. The front, back and buttons—all stainless steel—echo the Pebble Time Steel’s clean design, but with a slimmer profile. Those buttons, now knurled for extra grip, are so nice to touch you’ll want to linger. A screw-mounted back cover is durable, a polycarbonate layer between metal parts lets radios work smoothly and doubles as a subtle blue or red accent. Four colorways are planned, but names are still TBD and pre-order customers will get to choose their favorite soon via a survey.

The 1.5” e-paper display, with 64 colors, is the Time 2’s ace. E-paper is Pebble’s bread and butter, offering great visibility in the sun and up to 30 days of battery life—an endurance most smartwatches can only dream of. A flat, hardened glass lens covers the screen, reducing reflections for better viewing angles than the curved glass of older models. The touchscreen interface is intuitive, and quick-release 22mm straps make switching styles a breeze.

New features on the Time 2 include multicolor RGB LED backlight so you can change the glow to cool to warm throughout the day, along with a second microphone for noise cancellation during calls (or voice commands). Compass sensor (new) for better navigation. Heart rate monitor, step tracking, sleep monitoring for health nuts. Speaker and linear actuator motor for vibrations so you can hear and feel alerts. Water resistance is promised, though the final rating is still under wraps.

Core Devices CEO Eric Migicovsky calls this “the watch of my dreams” and we can see why. The design enhances the original Pebble Time’s minimalism with softened corners and thinner bezels. Compared to the 2016 Pebble Time 2 prototype, this one appears more unified. The curved top and bottom buttons on the right side are a wonderful touch that break up the straight lines of the previous versions.
