If you thought playing DOOM on earrings was strange, this audio spectrogram version by ‘wojtek-graj’ takes the FPS to entirely new level of strangeness. How do you play? An audio signal is generated that can be viewed as a spectrogram, while input is received from a microphone, with specific frequencies being mapped to specific keys.
For those interested in trying it out, you’ll need a WAD file (game data) of the DOOM Generic port – shareware version also works, along with the PortAudio development libraries, named portaudio19-dev in Debian repositories. Software capable of generating a live spectrogram to view the game’s output is also required, with the best being ocenaudio. Download it here now.
