You won’t find this custom PlayStation 1-themed PS5 console in stores because it was gifted to Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony, during his retirement party. This one-of-a-kind console also comes with a matching box that pays homage to the original’s North American release on September 9, 1995.
Despite being released after the SEGA Saturn (May 11, 1995), the Sony PlayStation sold more units within two days than its competitor did in five months, with nearly all of the initial shipment of 100,000 units sold in advance. Stores across the country ran out of both consoles and accessories, thanks in part to Ridge Racer, which some critics hailed as superior to SEGA’s Daytona USA. There were more than 100,000 pre-orders placed and a total of seventeen titles available on the market at the time of the PlayStation’s North American launch, compared to Saturn’s six launch games.
