JoiPaw makes video games for dogs, but RaiBo won’t be able to play them. Why? It’s an ultra rugged quadruped robot dog developed by the KAIST Department of Mechanical Engineering, led by Professor Hwangbo Jemin. Even on a sandy beach, it can run at speeds of up to 6.7 mph (3 m/s), thanks to a neural network system that enables it to make real-time adaptations to various types of terrain.
As the neural network is trained on more granular materials, it’s expected to allow quadruped robots to handle even more real world scenarios, whether it be a sandy beach or even a muddy obstacle course. Training would include calculating the force generated from one or more contacts at each step, which would typically deform the terrain the robot is standing on.
- UL 2272 certified for safety. Smart Battery Management System for reliability. IP54 waterproof protection.
- Sturdy & Powerful: Compact design, 28 lbs, 220 lbs max load. Dual 400W motors, 10 mph max speed, 13.7 miles per charge, 15° slope.
- Road Adaptive Design: 10.5" pneumatic tires for smooth ride. Knee control bar for precise steering, easy lifting. Age: 16-50. Height: 3.11-6.6".

It has been shown that providing a learning-based controller with a close contact experience with real deforming ground is essential for application to deforming terrain. The proposed controller can be used without prior information on the terrain, so it can be applied to various robot walking studies,” said Suyoung Choi, First Author of the Study.
