Priced at just $25, the all-new Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 not only has autofocus capabilities, but now sports a back-illuminated Sony IMX708 sensor, which offers higher resolution (12MP), more sensitive pixel design as well as a larger support for high-dynamic-range imaging. The higher horizontal resolution of the IMX708 sensor implies an ability to image finer details, while the 16:9 aspect ratio allows users to capture HD video, thus making use of the entire sensor area.
If you opt for the standard Field-of-View (FoV) variants of the Camera Module 3, they provide a 66° (horizontal) FoV, which is similar to its predecessor’s 62° FoV, and the wide-FoV variants boast a 102° (horizontal) FoV. Most importantly, it boasts powered autofocus support for the first time, thanks to the lens assembly being mounted on a voice-coil actuator. Available now directly from the Raspberry Pi store.

The new Camera Module 3 is only supported by the modern libcamera software environment and by the libcamera-based Picamera2 beta under Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye, and not by the legacy closed-source camera stack – you’ll need to make sure you have the latest version of the software before you dig in, as only the latest release has autofocus support,” said the foundation.
