RubenRetro GBS Windows Game Boy Color
Developer Ruben Retro’s GBS Windows is essentially a homebrew Game Boy Color application designed to emulate the look and feel of Microsoft Windows 3.1 on Nintendo’s handheld. It’s not a full operating system but a creative suite of mini-applications that capture the retro aesthetic of early 90s PCs.

Some of the key features include Minesweeper, a faithful recreation of the classic Windows puzzle game, adapted to the Game Boy Color’s controls and screen, as well as Paint, a pixel art tool that lets users create simple drawings. The latter is compatible with the Game Boy Printer to output creations.

Believe it or not, there’s even a Media Player that plays chiptune tracks by composer Beatscribe, which can run in the background while using other apps, replicating Windows’ multitasking vibe. An interactive Music Keyboard lets users compose basic tunes using the Game Boy’s buttons. Last, but not least, a Defense Game blends elements of Bubble Bobble and Space Invaders, where you defend against enemies.

How did RubenRetro accomplish this? GB Studio of course, which is a free, open-source, drag-and-drop game creation tool designed for making Game Boy and Game Boy Color ROMs. GB Studio’s event-based system allows developers to create game logic (button inputs triggering actions, etc.) without writing code. For example, Ruben could have scripted the Minesweeper grid to reveal tiles or flag mines using button presses. He likely used custom fonts to replicate Windows’ pixelated text, as GB Studio allows font assets to display characters like those in Minesweeper or Paint.

Simply put, the interface mimics Windows 3.1’s iconic gray windows, taskbar, and pixelated fonts, with chiptune audio enhancing the retro PC atmosphere. One thing is for sure, you’ll have to be quick to snag yourself a copy on Etsy for around $46 USD during the next restock.
