Ryan Howard Real Johnny 5 Robot Short Circuit
Movie fan and engineer Ryan Howard from Annesley in the Ashfield district of Nottinghamshire, England, spent the past 6-years building a real-life version of the Johnny 5 robot from ‘Short Circuit. So far, he’s spent around £20,000 ($25,508) creating the 200 kg (441 lb), 6-foot-tall replica in his garage, complete with a lightweight aluminum chassis.

There are over 10,000 parts and it can be programmed to sing, dance, talk as well as grab a beer or two from the pub. He’s been fascinated by the robot ever since watching the 1986 film on VHS as a child and eventually went on to teaching himself engineering as an adult. The idea of building a real-life Johnny 5 first popped into his head in 2018 after getting a 3D printer and the rest is history.

I’ve never done anything like it before and I’m very proud of him as it was an incredibly difficult thing to achieve. He lives with us and is part of the family now. I even talk to him. The kids love it and my wife’s done very well to put up with me, to be honest,” said Howard.
