Scientists have discovered that dolphins apparently get high’ with the help of a toxic puffer fish. According to experts, the creatures are using the puffer fish’s toxins – normally used as a defense mechanism – for their own enjoyment. First, they nudge the fish with their snouts and then they lapse into a trance-like state once the toxins are released. Continue reading for a video that shows the process.
In an upcoming BBC1 show called Dolphins: Spy in the Pod, shot by wildlife filmmaker John Downer, the dolphins were filmed gently playing with the puffer, passing it between each other for 20 to 30 minutes at a time, unlike the fish they had caught as prey which were swiftly torn apart.
