New Solid-State Battery Silicon Energy Density
We have seen the future of electric vehicles, and they use an innovative new silicon solid-state battery. Technically speaking, they use both a solid state electrolyte and an all-silicon anode, making it a silicon all-solid-state battery that is not only safer, but longer lasting, and more energy dense. Aside from automobiles, these batteries could also be used for grid storage purposes.

Silicon anodes are known for their energy density, which is 10-times greater than the graphite anodes found in today’s commercial lithium ion batteries. A few downsides that silicon anodes have is how they expand and contract as the battery charges or discharges, and their degradation with liquid electrolytes. This is mainly due to the silicon anodes and the liquid electrolytes they have been paired with. So, to combat these issues, the team removed all carbon and binders from the anode, while also removing the liquid electrolyte in favor of a sulfide-based solid electrolyte

This new work offers a promising solution to the silicon anode problem, though there is more work to do. I see this project as a validation of our approach to battery research here at UC San Diego. We pair the most rigorous theoretical and experimental work with creativity and outside-the-box thinking. We also know how to interact with industry partners while pursuing tough fundamental challenges,” said professor Meng.
