The Slow Mo Guys are back at it again, and this time, they use a high-speed camera to capture a LaserDisc being spun until it explodes into shrapnel at 80,000fps. Fortunately, used discs can be picked up on eBay for around $3, so other than the camera, the entire experiment did not break the bank.
The LaserDisc (LD) format was first available in 1978 and a standard 12-inch disc is made up of two single-sided aluminum discs layered in plastic. Early LaserDiscs utilized analog video stored in the composite domain with analog frequency modulation (FM) stereo sound and pulse-code modulation (PCM) digital audio. It was completely replaced by DVD in the North American market by 2001 and a total of 3.9 million LaserDisc players were sold before being discontinued in 2009.
