The SNES Edge-Enhancer and 2CHIP RGB Bypass mods fix one of the console’s biggest problems: a blurry video signal. Both the Super Famicom and SNES launched with two different video chips in 1995, the 1CHIP and 2CHIP.
The SNES 2CHIP Edge Enhancer mode is not based off of any forum post, but modder Voultar actually tore down the SNES’ DAC down internally via die shots to determine how the DAC was constructed and most importantly, why it has issues with video sharpness. What he came up with was a simple 5-wire install mod that can be quickly soldered onto the main board. There’s no word yet on availability, but Voultar expects it to cost around $100 USD when released.

This isn’t a boosted low-pass filter that will ‘sharpen’ the video. I don’t like that, and let me explain why. For starters, it’s bandwidth limited and the sharpening performance is predicated on the type of video content that the SNES’ PPU is rendering. I decided not to make something that was going to perform badly or even oscillate depending on what sort of game’s played,” said Voultar.
