Sony Handheld PS6 Portable Canis
A new handheld device, codenamed “Canis,” could change the way we play PlayStation games by combining portability with the ability to connect to a TV, just like the Switch. Based on previous leaks and industry chatter, this portable PS6 is a big push into the handheld space, going head to head with the Switch 2.

A hybrid console that switches between handheld and docked modes isn’t new—Nintendo perfected it with the Switch. But Sony is going to adapt this concept to the PlayStation ecosystem. Reports say the PS6 handheld will run games natively, not like the PlayStation Portal which streamed from a PS5. Codenamed Canis, this is one of three PS6 models, along with a flagship “Orion” console and a budget “PS6 S.” Both Canis variants—one a standalone handheld, the other a dockable console—have the same specs, with performance close to the PS5, with some boosts when connected to a TV.

According to leaks, the handheld PS6 will have a custom AMD chip with 4 Zen 6C cores and 2 low-power cores for system tasks. The GPU with 16 RDNA 5 compute units will run at 1.2 GHz in handheld mode and 1.65 GHz when docked. This should give ray tracing performance twice that of the PS5, but rasterization might be behind unless games are optimized for the device. Backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games is also on the table so you’ll have a huge library from day one. PS3 compatibility is unlikely due to its complex architecture, but being able to play recent PlayStation games on the go could be a game changer.

Pricing and release details add to the speculation. Moore’s Law Is Dead estimates the handheld PS6 will be $399-$499, same as the Switch 2’s $449.99. The Orion console might be $549-$699 and the PS6 S $299-$399, a more affordable entry point. A late 2027 release is rumored, giving Sony time to iron out the hardware and software. If these estimates hold, Sony could undercut the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X and position the PS6 handheld as a value play for gamers who want power and portability.

The handheld space is getting competitive and Sony is going to bring the heat. The Switch 2 has set the bar high with its hybrid design and game library, but Sony has the resources to match. By focusing on performance, backward compatibility and the PlayStation ecosystem, the PS6 handheld will appeal to both loyal PlayStation fans and newbies who want portable AAA gaming. Can it beat the Switch 2’s cultural impact? We’ll see, but one thing is for sure: Sony is in.
