SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet kits have hit Costco warehouses worldwide, and so far, they’ve been spotted in Canada, Japan, the UK, as well as several US locations. Some might be wondering if these can be purchased online, and the answer is that only the $2,499 USD Starlink Flat High Performance Kit is offered, while physical warehouses have the $399.99 – $499.99 Residential model.
Both the Flat High Performance and Residential kits come with 2-months of service credit, which amounts to around $500 and $280, respectively. One downside to internet via a geostationary satellite is that traffic has a minimum theoretical round-trip latency of at least 477 ms during optimal conditions, or in normal use, 600+ ms. However, Starlink satellites orbit at 1⁄105 to 1⁄30 of the height of geostationary orbits, resulting in improved latency of around 25-35 ms, similar to existing cable and fiber networks.
