Photographer Jason De Freitas installed a Super 8 camera onto an FPV drone to capture some epic shots that look to be straight from the 1960s. Rather than simply use a gimbaled platform, an FPV drone was selected to capture Super 8 footage from an entirely unique perspective, combining modern dynamic FPV-style movements with a vintage aesthetic.
This New south Wales, Australia-based photographer used his iFlight Chimera 7 drone as the platform and an Agfa Microflex 100 Super 8 camera, which just so happens to the be the smallest as well as lightest every manufactured at 500g. Since the drone itself wasn’t made for heavy duty photography, gentle flying was required and a short 4-minute flight time before needing to swap batteries. The mount had to be 3D-printed with a servo motor integrated to allow for remote triggering of the camera’s shutter button.

Projection is a huge part of why I like to use film, and being able to experience the entire analog process for this project just made the resulting perspective feel even more surreal. I developed the film myself, which is why the results are fairly scratched and dirty. The film was then scanned by Rewind Photo Lab in Sydney so that I could share the experience online,” said De Freitas.
